Battery Life
The 1201T comes with a 4400 mAh, 47 Whr Lithium-ion battery. This rating is a little lower than the earlier 10-inch Eees that generally came with 60+ Whr batteries. In our first test we played a 720p test video in loop on full brightness and sound. Here it survived for close to two hours. In the second test, we connected the 1201T to the internet via Wi-Fi. We performed light tasks like typing a word document in an online office suite. Here, it lasted a little over three hours.
The battery life is clearly half as much as you'd get from say, an Eee PC 1005HA. This is due to the bigger higher-res screen followed by an AMD/ATI processor-graphics combination that aren't as power-efficient as Intel's Atom platform. Lastly, that 6-cell battery isn't stuffed with as much juice as earlier Eee PCs, which is another reason for the drop in battery figures. A sub-three-hour battery life means you can just about finish watching that HD movie before it dies. If you're used to the stellar battery life that netbooks have been giving, then the 1201T's performance will disappoint you.
Price and Verdict
The Eee PC 1201T sells for just about Rs. 21,500 (excluding taxes) but beware of the fact that it comes with no OS on-board. So you'll have to shell out more if you want to install Windows on it later. It is the first model we've tested that has broken netbook barriers in some respects. Overall, the 1201T is a good option for people who are interested in HD playback. But we really missed an HDMI port on it and we're sure many will feel the same. Also, if you're looking for a netbook with a five-hour plus battery life, then the 1201T is not for you.
However, if you're looking for a big-screened netbook to watch HD movies along with internet and office productivity, then the 1201T is a decent and cheap option. Let's hope the Eee PC 1201PNL (with an Intel Atom-NVIDIA ION combination) gives us what's missing from this netbook.
